And, when rationing finally ended, Jimmy Gillan and I spent our tuppence pocket money on blackjacks at the shop on the corner of Saint Annes Road opposite Saint Mary’s Park. It was here that in 1953 we waved our flags at the new Queen as she passed Northwards, up Bury new Road to inspect the barracks of the Royal Lancashire Fusiliers. It was home. It was foggy. It was friendly.
